ANALYSIS OF JAMES JOYCE’S A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN, ULYSSES AND NEW DRAMA OF HENRIK IBSEN

--

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was written by James Joyce in 1916. The hero of the book is Stephen Dedalus. It is also very similar to autobiographical novel ‘Sons and Lovers’ of D.H. Lawrence but the narrative technique is very different than it. Joyce uses symbolism, labrinthinism and naturalism together in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Also it subjects Irish politics, religion and sentimentality. Dedalus who is the hero of the novel, in his own mind presents us his childhood, adolescence and his whole life perfectly. Dedalus also resemblances with first Christian Martyr and Icarus from ancient Greek mythology. In the novel the readers see the education and evolvement of Dedalus. Joyce uses direct interior monologue in the novel. Also he uses variational discourses same as he did in ‘Ulysses’. Like in the A Portrait of Artist’s, Joyce uses ‘pious’ writing for Ulysses too. A Portrait of Artist focuses on one hero’s mind but it evolves around historical and political issues too.

On the other hand, Ulysses is described 20th century’s greatest novel. However it was banned in a few countries like America because of ‘unusual frankness’. Also it is a psychological novel. There are three personalities and three different psychological issues Leopald Bloom, Mary Bloom and Stephen Dedalus. The subject matter of Ulysses is human connections and comparison of the sexes. Chapter to chapter, Ulysses was written with a magnificent linguistic style. From sentimentality to Shakespeare Joyce multilayers the story and play the story to forwards and backwards via using stream of consciousness. Like A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, there is no third person narration. Ulysses is very detailed and shows human consciousness and deep down changes like a painter paints her/his portrait. Joyce modeled upon Homer’s Odyssey. It happens the 16th off June 1904, with eighteen chapters and three character’s stream of consciousness. It is like a comic satire and mock heroic. There is character, unfaithful Penelope and she is an adulteress. Joyce’s magnificent poetry gives the novel an unity with metaphors, symbols, ambiguities and overtones. The novel rises with universal human tensions thanks to imagery. Joyce embroidered Christianity issues via using England vs. Ireland issues and Shakespeare in his novel. The novel is written like Dantean structure, it divided in three parts and Joyce has spent seven years to write this novel.

Well, when it comes to the epoch of the Drama; Henri Ibsen was the smartest in them all. No one has ever influenced Ibsen a bit, not even Rousseau and Emerson. His works were in a perfect order and a circled routine. He used soul crisis in his characters. He wrote analytically. Characters are not the first thing for Ibsen’s new drama. He opens his drama with a question, a conflict or with a crisis. It takes readers attention mostly. He does not use the verse form in his new drama. In his new drama Ibsen always use new words. The women he used in his dramas is undeniably true formed. He closes his characters with sympathy and with a large insight. He is very artsy. Besides When We Dead Awaken and A Doll’s House are the masterpieces of Henrik Ibsen.
